USM RECEIVES COURTESY CALL FROM SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY (SJTU)
USM PENANG, 17 April 2025 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today received a courtesy call from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) delegates from China.
Both parties then proceeded to the conference room at the Chancellory Building for discussions.
The discussion saw the attendance of 30 officials from both SJTU and USM, with the aim of fostering collaboration via academic, innovation and culture from both institutions.
USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, in his welcoming speech, thanked the members of SJTU for choosing USM to be part of its new journey.
“The Cultural and Education Centre established at USM is quite contemporary, as USM presently has over 7,000 students from China enrolled in various Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral programmes. Hopefully, we can enhance the centre to promote and support initiatives for collaboration between our universities,” said Abdul Rahman.
Chairperson of SJTU University Council, Professor Yang Zhenbin, then invited USM to join in the short-term student exchange programmes, research and technology entrepreneurship to cultivate innovative outcomes in extending support to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achieved by USM.
The discussion then continued with a quick sharing session regarding the overview of both universities, with USM Director of Academic and International Division, Professor Dr. Lee Keat Teong leading the session.
At the end of the session, both SJTU and USM will be preparing to open their doors and liaise with each other to provide higher quality education and accelerate the achievement of a sustainable future among the diverse communities from both countries.
