OSAKA, JAPAN, 17 October 2024 – Fifteen students from underprivileged B40 families in Penang have embarked on an enriching educational journey in Japan, as part of the 2024 innovative Hybrid Education dan International Experience Programme (HEIEP).

The programme was jointly organised by USAINS Group and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), in aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), more specifically Goal 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes inclusive and equitable education for all.

The students, who left Penang on 14 October, had a memorable cultural exchange and learning experience the following day at Josho Keiko High School in Hirakatashi, Osaka.

They were warmly welcomed by over 800 Japanese students, fostering an atmosphere of friendship and collaboration—reflecting Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

The students engaged in a series of interactive activities, including observing innovative STEM classes and laboratories.

This hands-on experience led to meaningful exchanges about the practical applications of science and technology in daily life, highlighting the importance of fostering innovation and resilience as advocated by Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

One of the key highlights of the visit was a vibrant cultural performance, where both Malaysian and Japanese students showcased traditional dances and music, deepening their mutual understanding and appreciation of each other’s cultures.

The Penang students also participated in sports and physical activities with their Japanese peers, promoting friendship and teamwork—essential elements for building inclusive communities, as outlined in Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

The group’s learning journey began the day before their school visit with an inspiring trip to the Osaka Science Museum, where they were introduced to the latest advancements in science and technology, an experience that further enhanced their interactions at Josho Keiko High School.

As the week unfolds, these budding leaders from Penang continue to forge connections and share perspectives, fully embracing this unique opportunity.

USM PENANG, 4 October 2024 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through its Graduate School of Business (GSB), successfully held the 4th International Conference on Business Sustainability and Innovation (ICBSI 2024) from 3 – 4 October 2024 at the Olive Tree Hotel, Penang.

The conference, themed “Smart Sustainability: Navigating the Future with Innovation and Resilience,” focuses on how the integration of smart technologies can drive sustainable practices to address critical environmental challenges like climate change, resource depletion, and pollution.

USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Industry and Community Network, Professor Dr. Azlan Amran, who officiated the opening ceremony on the first day of the conference on behalf of the USM Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the significance of the conference in navigating the digital era with sustainability at its core.

“In an era defined by rapid technological advancements and global challenges, the pursuit of smart sustainability requires us to harness the power of innovation and resilience.

“As we confront pressing challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and socio-economic disparities, it becomes increasingly clear that smart solutions driven by sustainable practices and innovative technologies are indispensable,” he said.

Azlan added, “By leveraging these innovations, industries can optimise resource utilisation, reduce carbon footprints, and enhance resilience in the face of global uncertainties.”

In his opening speech, he also congratulated USM Graduate School of Business, and fellow collaborators namely Multimedia University (MMU), Sukkur IBA University, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Cawangan Kedah for successfully organising the ICBSI 2024.

ICBSI 2024 has attracted significant interest from more than 130 participants across Malaysia and other countries, with around 80 presenters selected to share their research on cutting-edge topics related to business innovation, sustainability, and technology.

All accepted papers will be published in MyCite indexed journals, and selected papers will be considered for publication in Scopus/ERA indexed journals.

Keynote speakers included notable experts in the fields of sustainability and innovation, such as Professor Azlan himself, and Datuk Dr. Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir, Director General of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB).

Their sessions provided invaluable insights into building a sustainable future through innovation and resilience.

USM PENANG, 11 July 2024 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently hosted its annual PITCH@USM programme, a platform designed to cultivate entrepreneurship and innovation among students and staff.

The programme aligns with USM's APEX agenda, which emphasizes sustainable performance-based education by providing capacity-building and financial support to aspiring entrepreneurs.

The semi-finals, held on 3 July 2024, saw 32 teams showcased their innovative business ideas. The competition intensified on 4 July as the top 12 teams advanced to the final round, held at The Nest and the BHEPA Student Development Centre Meeting Room.

USM ‘INNOZILLA 2024’ BRINGS TOGETHER INNOVATORS AIMING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

USM PENANG, 6 November 2024 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today hosted the USM ‘INNOZILLA 2024’ innovation exhibition and competition, showcasing groundbreaking technology and innovations that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and gathering participants, experts, industry leaders, and stakeholders committed to a sustainable future.

Co-organised with the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) and in partnership with Cradle Fund Sdn. Bhd., TusStar, JCI, and the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), USM INNOZILLA 2024 featured 188 inventions (143 displayed physically and 45 virtually) from various schools, colleges, universities, and startups across Penang, Perak, Kedah, Kelantan, and Pahang, with international participation from Indonesia and Singapore.

With the theme “Bridging Innovation Between Academia, Young Innovator, Government, Industry, and Community for Sustainable Development”, the two-day event brought participants together to compete in two categories namely Vanguard for more advanced inventors, and Trailblazer for emerging innovators to encourage a broad range of creative ideas and solutions.

Present at the officiating ceremony was the Penang Deputy Chief Minister II and Exco for Human Capital Development, Science, and Technology, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo Karpal Singh.

In his opening speech, Jagdeep emphasised that initiatives like INNOZILLA help to create a nurturing environment for future talent and drive innovation across various sectors.

“I am thrilled to see young innovators from primary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities participating, as these young minds represent the future leaders of our state and nation, and we must provide them with the skills, resources, and inspiration needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world,” he said.

Jagdeep added that Penang’s position as a hub for semiconductor and electronic industries enables it to attract cutting-edge technology and high-value investments, transforming innovative ideas into practical applications for global markets.

He also remarked that events such as INNOZILLA showcase Penang’s technological strengths and highlight its role as a dynamic innovation centre capable of tackling complex global challenges.

Jagdeep extended his congratulations to all participants, noting that their hard work, dedication, and excellence, whether in labs, classrooms, or industries contribute to a future where Penang stands as a beacon of sustainable, inclusive innovations.

Meanwhile, USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed welcomed all attendees, and describing INNOZILLA as a vibrant ecosystem that fosters knowledge-sharing, talent scouting, and collaboration between researchers and industry.

USM PENANG, 8 May 2024 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and ams OSRAM successfully organised the “3rd School of Physics & ams OSRAM Industry in Classroom” programme for postgraduate students within the field of applied and engineering physics and students who undertake the MSc Solid State Physics course.

The programme aims to empower postgraduate students with information on recent developments related to semiconductor epitaxy techniques and device development through structured guest lecture series by ams OSRAM doctorate engineers.

Close to 30 emerging scholars participated in the programme launched recently at the USM School of Physics. The programme commenced with an engagement session by ams OSRAM Director of R&D, Dr. David Lacey.

Throughout the semester, a series of lectures would be delivered by ams OSRAM engineers; Dr. Fabian Kopp, Dr. Abdelkarim Kahouli and Dr. Azharul Ariff Kamarulzaman, with topics covering properties and MOCVD growth of III Nitrides, design and production of LEDs and the optimisation of growth in improving LED efficiency.

As explained by the coordinator of the event, Ts. Dr. Wan Maryam Wan Ahmad Kamil, “This initiative was developed with ams OSRAM to offer added value to the postgraduates, who are geared to become the talent pool for front-end semiconductor industry and at the same time promote academic excellence. I hope the participants would fully benefit from the programme”.

USM AND ARENA-PAC REVOLUTIONIZE MALAYSIA'S RESEARCH NETWORK WITH 100GBPS HIGH SPEED INFRASTRUCTURE

USM PENANG, 18 September 2024 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has strengthened its position as a leader in academic innovation by partnering with Arterial Research and Education Network Asia-Pacific (ARENA-PAC) to develop and operate a 100Gbps research and education network, a first for Malaysia.

This groundbreaking collaboration aimed to enhance high-speed connectivity, research capacity, and educational opportunities for academic institutions across the country, with extended benefits for the broader Asia-Pacific region.

Both parties inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) yesterday to mark this significant milestone in Malaysia's commitment to technological advancement in academia.

USM was represented by its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, while signing on behalf of ARENA-PAC was its Co-Director Professor Dr. Jun Murai from Keio University, Japan.

Abdul Rahman emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “This partnership with ARENA-PAC marks a significant milestone in Malaysia's commitment to advancing research and education through technology.”

“The 100Gbps network will provide our researchers and students with unprecedented access to global resources and collaboration opportunities, positioning Malaysia at the forefront of academic innovation," he said.

He further said that the 100Gbps research network will not only boost Malaysia’s academic landscape but will also support the development of advanced applications in critical areas such as artificial intelligence, climate modeling, and genomics.

“This cutting-edge infrastructure was expected to increase the global competitiveness of Malaysian research institutions and foster cross-border collaboration with international research bodies.

“The new network will become an integral part of developing a new generation of innovators, particularly in the field of internet engineering, and will further bolster Penang’s reputation as the "Silicon Valley of the East," Abdul Rahman stated in his speech at the MoA signing ceremony.

Professor Jun added, “By joining forces with USM to develop this high-speed network, we took a crucial step towards creating a robust research and education infrastructure that will benefit Malaysian institutions.”

“This collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission to foster innovation and knowledge exchange across borders,” he further added.

In short, USM and ARENA-PAC’s collaboration in jointly developing cutting-edge 100Gbps network infrastructure will:

  • Enhance data-intensive research capabilities for Malaysian institutions.
  • Foster joint research initiatives in network technologies.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and capacity building among member institutions.
  • Enable real-time collaboration on large-scale research projects, both domestically and internationally.

USM AND PENSONIC SIGN MOU TO STRENGTHEN RESEARCH AND BOOST GRADUATE EMPLOYABILITY

This MoU aims to mutually benefit university graduates and the industry by advancing essential skills, particularly in engineering.

According to him, in addition to academic recognition, USM’s graduates share a common goal, which is to build fulfilling careers that provide stability, financial security, opportunities for advancement, and the ability to contribute back to society.

USM HBP BEsT PROGRAMME WELCOMES ACCREDITATION VISIT FROM ETAC BEM

USM PENANG, 18 May 2024 - The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Housing, Building, and Planning (HBP) recently received a visit from the Engineering Technology Accreditation Council of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (ETAC BEM) for a full accreditation evaluation.

The purpose of the visit was to ensure that the Bachelor of Building Engineering Technology with Honours (BEsT) programme met the rigorous criteria established by ETAC BEM.

This evaluation intends to acknowledge that graduates from the BEsT programme are well-prepared to embark on careers as engineering technologists.

The two-day assessment was led by Ts. Dr. Sabrina Karim, along with ETAC panel members Ir. Ts. Dr. Nurhidayah Azmy and Ir. Mohd Mawardi Hassim.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed participated virtually, delivering a welcoming speech to the delegates.

The BEsT programme was formerly known as the Bachelor of Science (Housing, Building and Planning) (Honours) (Building Technology) and was accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

To align with the ETAC standards, the programme was upgraded, refined, and rebranded as the Bachelor of Building Engineering Technology with Honours (BEsT).

PENANG, 1 October 2024 – It has been said that when you aspire to achieve success, reach for the sky. Which is what Keith Isaac Noni of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) had done while studying at the School of Industrial Technology in USM.

As an alumnus of the MSc in Environmental Science programme at the School, and a rising PhD candidate in the Environmental Technology programme, he has been awarded the prestigious Early Career Poster Presentation Award.

This accolade was bestowed upon him at the highly acclaimed 16th International Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution (iCACGP) Symposium and the 18th International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) Science Conference, positioning him among the brightest emerging talents in atmospheric science.

Held from the 9-13 September 2024 at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, the iCACGP-IGAC Conference is a globally renowned platform for atmospheric scientists.

Keith was awarded for his outstanding poster in the “Air Quality Impact” category, showcasing his impactful research on kitchen emissions and their health risks in commercial settings.

The research done by Keith focuses on the emission of pollutants from kitchens in commercial environments, an area of concern highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the world’s largest environmental health risks.

Cooking, especially in commercial kitchens, produces a variety of air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM) that can have carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects on individuals exposed to them.

Through his Master's research project, "Source Characterization and Health Risk Assessment of Ambient Kitchen Emissions," Keith analysed the variability of these pollutants, considering factors such as food type, cooking temperature, and methods.

His work aims to create an activity-based emission inventory to model indoor air concentrations and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.

This research aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on Good Health and Well-being, particularly concerning the health and safety of kitchen workers.

The project which was supervised by Ts. Dr. Norhaniza Amil encompassed objectives such as determining VOC and PM concentrations in commercial kitchen emissions, assessing health risks from exposure, estimating the formation of air pollutants, and analysing correlations between kitchen scenarios and emissions through positive matrix factorization (PMF).

The IGAC Early Career Programme, of which Keith is involved in, is dedicated to fostering a global network of budding researchers and supporting international research and collaboration.

Keith was one of 40 early career researchers (ECRs) chosen from over 150 worldwide applicants to participate in this programme.

Throughout the conference, he engaged in the Early Career Short Course, presented at poster sessions, and took part in special facility tours, networking opportunities, and social activities designed to connect ECRs with senior scientists.

Keith received his award at the closing ceremony of the iCACGP-IGAC Conference on 13 September, a proud moment that marked his growing recognition in the field of environmental science and technology.

The IGAC programme is funded by notable organisations, including NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and NSF (National Science Foundation).

USM PENANG, 19 March 2024 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) through the National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAv6) recently marks a significant milestone in its collaborative journey involving government, industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and academia by organising a dialogue session entitled ‘Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Transformation for a Sustainable Net-Zero Future,’ supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Aligned with the Penang state government's agenda, the programme has brought together 60 participants from the government, industry, NGOs and academia with the aim of exploring innovations and technologies to safeguard the environment through scientific advancements.

The event was graced with the presence of the Member of the Penang State Executive Council (Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital), YB Zairil Khir Johari.

In his officiating address, Zairil Khir emphasised the critical importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) data at the state level, recognising the necessity for high-quality statistics in measuring and monitoring SDG progress.

He underscored the state government's commitment to data transformation, highlighting the pivotal role of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Data Analytics.

“These technologies not only provide unprecedented insights into our complex environment, but they also empower us to formulate data-driven strategies to reduce climate risks and foster resilience,” he said.

Zairil Khir also urged organisations to harness the power of technology for the betterment of the planet and future generations, advocating for increased collaboration, innovation attraction in Penang, and resource optimisation.

NAv6 Director, Associate Professor Dr. Selvakumar Manickam highlighted that there are many siloed systems, with everyone creating their own solutions.

“It is important for entities to undergo digital transformation, as there is a collective realisation that by working together, we can more effectively address issues such as climate change,” he said.

The programme featured guest speakers from diverse industries who deliberated on climate change mitigation, cross-sectoral collaboration, challenges, opportunities, and strategies for utilising technology to address pressing environmental concerns and drive sustainable development.

Throughout the session, it became evident that decarbonisation holds paramount importance for both the public and private sectors.

Therefore, the exchange of data and collaboration among government, industry, and academia are essential in implementing effective strategies and addressing complex environmental challenges.

In the meeting with the delegates, USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, Professor Dr. Habibah A Wahab pointed out that semiconductors represent a niche area of USM in research and innovation.

“We have been working very closely with industry leaders in Penang and Kulim across the Electrical & Electronics (E&E) value chain from integrated circuit (IC) design, epitaxy and wafer fabrication to advanced packaging,” she said.

At the end of the meeting, Habibah and USM hope that the tour will move ahead on the path of research and collaboration that will help shape the future of Malaysia.

PENANG, 25 June 2024 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education (JPT), Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), hosted an exclusive Dialogue Session today, featuring the Minister of Higher Education, Dato' Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, and Electrical and Electronic (E&E) Industry Partners.

The event aimed to facilitate discussions on the E&E sector's needs concerning talent supply and job offerings, seeking input and feedback from industry partners to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the industry.

This session is expected to be a significant milestone in fostering closer ties between MoHE and the E&E industry, contributing to Malaysia's economic growth and innovation.

Zambry Abdul Kadir in his speech highlighted the Ministry's commitment to preparing future talents with advanced knowledge and skills necessary for the rapidly evolving E&E industry, particularly in semiconductor technology.

He emphasised the alignment of the E&E sector with global trends, the current Malaysian E&E ecosystem, and MoHE's initiatives in talent development.

"MoHE has launched several initiatives to align university graduates' skills with industry standards and improve employability. These include the MOHE Research Industry Innovation Incubation (MRI3), the Structured Industry Apprenticeship Programme (SIAP) for integrated circuit design, and the MOHE Intel Elite Internship Programme," he stated.

He also mentioned other programmes like PENJANA KPT-CAP, the Teaching Factory Programme, the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Transformation Programme, and flexible micro-credential programmes aimed at increasing graduate employability through exposure to high-end facilities and current job market demands.

"This dialogue serves as an excellent platform to better understand the challenges in the E&E industry, particularly in semiconductor technology, allowing MOHE to strategize support for future talents, academic programmes, and R&D activities for postgraduate programmes," he added.

Meanwhile, USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, in his welcoming address underscored the importance of close collaboration between public universities and the industry to produce talents with relevant knowledge and skill sets.

He highlighted the efforts of the Consortium of E&E led by USM and the MoHE Research and Industry-Infused Incubator (MRI3), which play pivotal roles in training industry-ready talents.

"Currently, over 900 students from across Malaysia are registered in the MRI3 portal, with more than 500 slots available in 30 industries," he said.

He expressed gratitude to industry players for supporting academia in industry-ready talent development through enhanced educational curricula; state-of-the-art facilities and hands-on training opportunities; and R&D collaboration.

"Let us build upon our successes and continue to shape the next chapter of Malaysia's semiconductor journey,” Abdul Rahman concluded.

This was said by the Director of the Centre for Innovation and Consultation (CIC) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Professor Ir. Dr. Srimala Sreekantan) during her welcoming speech at the USM-MRANTI Supercharger Penang 2024, representing the USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, Professor Dr. Habibah A Wahab.

Held at SAINS@USM, the programme was co-organised by the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI).

The programme brought together researchers, university start-ups, spin-off companies, and industry partners from the Northern Region to interact and engage with visionary researchers, inventors, and like-minded individuals, all of whom are passionate about advancing technology.

In her speech, Srimala emphasised that innovation thrives in environments where ideas can connect. It requires support from academia, entrepreneurs, funding agencies, industries, and other stakeholders to create an ecosystem that guides ideas and proof of concepts (POCs) towards commercialisation.

USM PENANG, 3 December 2024 – In a significant move towards sustainable development, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has partnered with Green Cement Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Chin Hin Group Berhad, to enhance the production of eco-friendly construction materials.

This collaboration formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 10 July 2024, aligns with Malaysia's national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

A vital component of this partnership is the integration of eco-efficient concrete technology developed by Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Cheah Chee Ban from USM's School of Housing, Building and Planning.

This innovative technology significantly reduces the carbon footprint of concrete production by up to 80% and, at the same time, minimises environmental degradation caused by traditional sand and limestone mining.

By adopting these technological advancements, Chin Hin Group aims to lower its environmental impact and contribute to the sustainable transformation of Malaysia's construction industry.

This initiative supports USM and Chin Hin Group's commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

It also positions the company as a leader in sustainable practices within the industry, reinforcing Malaysia’s pledge to become a carbon-neutral country by 2050.

The MOU will remain effective for five years and facilitate joint research and development, focusing on green building technologies and eco-efficient construction materials.

PENANG, 4 July 2024 - The Director of the Institute of Nano Optoelectronics Research and Technology (INOR), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamir Pakhuruddin was recently interviewed by Deutsche Welle (DW), a media outlet from Germany.

The interview was conducted by DW’s Asia Pacific Bureau Chief, Georg Matthes, who previously served as the EU Correspondent for Germany's global news broadcaster in Brussels.

The topic of discussion was the recent boom in the semiconductor industry in Malaysia, examined from an academic perspective.

Among the topics discussed was the emphasis on semiconductors as a key research area at USM.

Mohd Zamir introduced INOR as one of the Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICoE) at USM, highlighting its specialisation in III-Nitrides Epitaxy for Optoelectronics and Advanced Devices.

He also elaborated on Malaysia's New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), launched by the Malaysian government in 2023, and the objectives outlined in the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS).

“The challenges that Malaysia faces in moving up the semiconductor value chain include, from back-end manufacturing activities to integrated circuit (IC) design, epitaxy and wafer fabrication, equipment manufacturing, and advanced semiconductor packaging,” he explained.

He further discussed the key factors for attracting high-value foreign direct investment (FDI) into Malaysia and the recent industry focus on wide bandgap semiconductors, particularly silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) technologies.

Mohd Zamir also addressed strategies to ensure a sustainable talent pipeline for the semiconductor industry.

In addition to Mohd Zamir’s interview session, DW also interviewed representatives from Infineon and AT&S for the same project. The findings from these interviews will be published by Deutsche Welle (DW) as a short video and article in the near future.
