USM AND UM STRENGTHEN TIES THROUGH RESEARCH AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH IN SURABAYA
USM PENANG, 2 January 2025 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) have deepened their academic collaboration and commitment to sustainability through a Global Outreach Programme that engaged students, faculty, and the local community in Indonesia.
Organised by final-year students of USM’s Building Engineering Technology Programme (BEsT) under the School of Housing, Building, and Planning (HBP), the initiative ran from 30 November to 5 December 2024, fostering academic collaboration, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
Students explored key cities such as Surabaya, Bromo, and Malang, enriching their exposure to international built environment contexts and sustainability.
A key highlight of the programme was the Final-Year Project (FYP) Colloquium, where students from both universities presented their research findings and received constructive feedback from academic panels.
The session enhanced their ability to articulate ideas and collaborate across cultures, paving the way for future research collaborations.
Participants contributed to a University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative by installing Biopori Infiltration Holes to promote organic waste composting, aiming to educate students and the local community on sustainable waste management and environmental conservation while emphasising sustainability, community engagement, and the ethical responsibilities of future professionals.
Guest lectures delivered by USM BEsT members provided insights into comparative construction technologies between Malaysia and Indonesia, fostering innovation, adaptability, and teamwork.
The exposure enabled students to critically analyse different built environment strategies, equipping them with the necessary skills to address global challenges in the industry.
This outreach initiative reflects USM’s dedication to experiential learning and holistic student development, ensuring that future graduates not only meet industry demands but also contribute meaningfully to society.
USM extends its appreciation to Universitas Negeri Malang for their warm hospitality and invaluable collaboration, as such initiatives not only strengthen academic partnerships but also open doors for future research, sustainability projects, and cultural exchanges, hence enriching both institutions and their respective communities.
