USM-GREEN CEMENT SDN. BHD. INKED TWO COLLABORATIONS; STRENGTHENS PARTNERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION

USM PENANG, 14 February 2025 – In a significant move towards advancing sustainable energy solutions, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today has taken strategic steps with the signing of a Technology Licensing and Commercialisation Agreement (TLA) and Research Collaboration Agreement (RCA) with Green Cement Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Chin Hin Group Berhad, specialising in eco-friendly materials.

Aligning with Malaysia's national low-carbon agenda, this partnership aims to develop and commercialise low-carbon binders using cutting-edge research work of Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Cheah Chee Ban and his research team at the USM School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP).

The goal is to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions while maintaining concrete quality and durability.

Signing on behalf of USM was its Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, Professor Dr. Habibah A Wahab representing the Vice-Chancellor, while Green Cement Sdn. Bhd. was represented by Chin Hin Group Berhad Chief Executive Officer, Ng Wai Luen.

Also present were the Director of USM Centre for Innovation and Consultation, Professor Ir. Dr. Srimala Sreekantan and her deputy, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Cheah Chee Ban; Dean of School of Housing, Building and Planning, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Md Azree Othuman Mydin; and Green Cement Sdn. Bhd. Senior Operating Manager, Lim Si Kai.

Addressing the researchers, Habibah said, “At USM, we have always been at the forefront of research and innovation, particularly in addressing critical global challenges such as climate change and environmental sustainability.”

“I am pleased that this collaboration combines high-tech research with industry expertise to produce practical and high-impact sustainable solutions that will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

“Furthermore, this agreement not only focuses on addressing environmental issues but also on technology transfer while stimulating economic growth, especially in the building and construction industry. It aligns with Malaysia’s National Low-Carbon Agenda,” she added.

Habibah further stated that the collaboration underscores the importance of academia-industry partnerships in driving innovation and addressing global challenges.

Meanwhile, Wai Luen said, “At Chin Hin Building Materials Group, we recognise the urgent need for sustainable solutions in the construction industry, with cement production contributing nearly 8% of global CO2 emissions.

“Therefore, this collaboration reflects our commitment to reducing carbon footprints, minimising environmental impact, and pioneering sustainable construction materials,” he said.

Wai Luen also said, “We deeply appreciate USM’s dedication to green technology. USM’s expertise in low-carbon cement innovation is key to transforming the industry, and we are proud to embark on this journey together.”
