USM, GREEN CEMENT SDN. BHD. COLLABORATE TO ENHANCE PRODUCTION OF ECO-FRIENDLY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
USM PENANG, 3 December 2024 – In a significant move towards sustainable development, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has partnered with Green Cement Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Chin Hin Group Berhad, to enhance the production of eco-friendly construction materials.
This collaboration formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 10 July 2024, aligns with Malaysia's national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
A vital component of this partnership is the integration of eco-efficient concrete technology developed by Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Cheah Chee Ban from USM's School of Housing, Building and Planning.
This innovative technology significantly reduces the carbon footprint of concrete production by up to 80% and, at the same time, minimises environmental degradation caused by traditional sand and limestone mining.
By adopting these technological advancements, Chin Hin Group aims to lower its environmental impact and contribute to the sustainable transformation of Malaysia's construction industry.
This initiative supports USM and Chin Hin Group's commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
It also positions the company as a leader in sustainable practices within the industry, reinforcing Malaysia’s pledge to become a carbon-neutral country by 2050.
The MOU will remain effective for five years and facilitate joint research and development, focusing on green building technologies and eco-efficient construction materials.
It also includes human capital development through scholarships and employment opportunities for USM students in the construction sector.
This collaboration underscores a shared vision for a sustainable future and highlights the vital role of academic-industry partnerships in achieving national environmental goals that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.
