A GROUP of 70 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students from the School of Communication brought smiles and meaningful engagement to some 80 residents of the Homeless Transit Centre in Jalan C.Y. Choy through a heartfelt corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, Comm@Love In Transit (Comm@L.I.T) on June 14.

The event, held in collaboration with the transit centre, was spearheaded by Prof Dr. Jamilah Ahmad and aimed to strengthen ties between the university and the community while allowing students to put their knowledge into practice.

Throughout the day, participants enjoyed a variety of engaging activities, including traditional ‘explore race’ games, a community clean-up (gotong-royong), aerobics, oral care health talks, and more.

State Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman, Lim Siew Khim, officiated the closing ceremony and praised the students for their contribution to social outreach.

“The boost in self-confidence and motivation among the residents to rejoin society is a priceless achievement.

This proves that collaboration between institutions and communities can make a deep impact,” Lim said in her speech.

She further encouraged more organisations to step forward and support the transit centre through similar CSR efforts.

“Together, we can create more opportunities for those in need.

“I am proud to see USM students applying their knowledge on the ground. This reflects the essence of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which emphasise community well-being, lifelong learning, and environmental care,” she added.

Lim also shared that since its inception, the centre has successfully helped 195 former residents secure jobs and reintegrate into society, a testament to its effectiveness in transforming lives.
