Cement Industries of Malaysia Bhd (CIMA) has committed RM590,000 to support research on eco-friendly marine concrete solutions, advancing a partnership first established under a memorandum of understanding signed in October 2024.
Led by Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), the project will focus on the design, field deployment and ecological monitoring of sustainable marine concrete structures. CIMA will contribute its expertise in green technology and sustainable construction materials.
The research aims to develop marine concrete that supports coastal infrastructure needs while enhancing biodiversity and protecting coastal ecosystems. It aligns with Malaysia’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
The letter of offer for the grant was signed at a ceremony at CEMACS, USM, by CIMA Managing Director Hairol Azizi Tajudin, USAINS Group Managing Director Farid Wajidi Mat Yusoff and CEMACS Director Professor Dato’ Dr Aileen Tan Shau Hwai. The event also included a tribute to the late Professor Dato’ Dr Zulfigar Yasin, whose contributions were key to the collaboration.
