GEORGE TOWN: Penang governor Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak will be awarded an honorary doctorate in International Relations at the 62nd convocation ceremony of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

USM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Momamed said Tun Ahmad Fuzi, who heads the list of honorary degree recipients, is to be conferred the award by the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, who is also the USM chancellor, at the first session tomorrow.

"Tun Ahmad Fuzi is being awarded the honorary doctorate in International Relations in recognition of his significant contributions and services to the nation," Abdul Rahman said at a special press conference for the 62nd USM convocation ceremony here today.

"Additionally, this award is in recognition of Tun Ahmad Fuzi's extensive experience in the fields of administration and public service, international diplomacy, economic development, and leadership across various sectors."

Abdul Rahman said that besides Tun Ahmad Fuzi, USM will also recognise the country's prominent corporate figures by awarding an honorary doctor in Management to Prasarana chairman Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim.

It is to appreciate his extraordinary contributions to digital transformation and telecommunications worldwide, as well as the growth of the country's public transport sector.

Meanwhile, he said the title of Professor Emeritus will be awarded to two USM academic figures who have greatly contributed to the development of knowledge at the national and international levels.

They are Datuk Dr Chan Ngai Weng, also known as "Malaysia's Waterman" from the Centre for Humanity Studies for his significant contribution to the field of sustainable water resource management, while the other is Dr Abu Hassan Ahmad, a highly respected honorary professor at the Centre for Biological Sciences, who specialises in research related to vector control and mosquito-borne diseases as well as sustainable pest management.

According to Abdul Rahman, a total of 8,971 graduates will receive their scrolls including two recipients of honorary degrees and two recipients of the title of Professor Emeritus, at the convocation ceremony that will take place over eight days starting tomorrow until Nov 26.

Additionally, a total 3,396 graduates will receive scrolls for their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master's degrees, Bachelor's degrees (5,508) and 56 nursing diplomas.

Earlier at the press conference, Abdul Rahman also introduced five outstanding graduates who will receive their respective awards at tomorrow's convocation ceremony. - BERNAMA
