GEORGE TOWN, June 5 (Bernama) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to enhance collaboration aimed at advancing the nation's communication technology and digitalisation efforts.

The signing allows both entities to work together in bolstering research, knowledge transfer and talent development to shape a future generation better equipped to navigate complex and changing socio-economic challenges and environments.

USM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed signed the MoU on behalf of the university, while MCMC was represented by MCMC deputy managing director Datuk Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin at the USM Chancellor Building today.

Abdul Rahman said the MoU encompasses various programme components, including knowledge-sharing sessions with students through career fairs, knowledge exhibitions and talent scouting, including student interviews for potential roles at MCMC as industry trainees or employees.

“I extend my gratitude to MCMC for entrusting USM with research efforts, student and staff exchanges, where in our pursuit of technology, we need to be guided by our own values.”

“Besides our science-based study centres, USM also boasts strengths in literacies and humanities-based study centres. Therefore, I believe this will provide a balanced approach to technology adoption within society,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zulkarnain described the collaboration as a promising start for both parties, emphasising that it not only involves aspects of communication technology development but also takes into account humanitarian considerations.

“MCMC consistently collaborates with academic and local universities to further strengthen capabilities in formulating more precise policy interventions through research collaboration conducted by universities.

“MCMC and universities possess unique strengths, and if these expertise areas are combined, it will not only benefit our institutions but also all USM and MCMC staff, students and the community as a whole,” he added.

Three USM study centres, namely the School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences and School of Computer Sciences, lead this bilateral collaboration with MCMC's Geospatial and Data Management Division.
