WE LEAD IN ECO-INNOVATION: USM AND CIMA LAUNCH MALAYSIA’S FIRST ECO-MARINE CONCRETE INITIATIVE
USM PENANG, 29 May 2025 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through its Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), and Cement Industries of Malaysia Berhad (CIMA), have embarked on a landmark research collaboration to develop Malaysia’s first eco-engineered marine concrete structures.
With a RM590,000 research grant from CIMA, this initiative positions USM at the forefront of sustainable coastal development – leading the way in integrating science, engineering, and environmental stewardship.
The partnership was officially launched at CEMACS and represents a bold response to escalating global challenges such as climate change, coastal degradation, and biodiversity loss.
The project seeks to replace conventional marine construction with green, reef-friendly innovations that enhance ecosystem resilience while maintaining structural performance.
This effort supports Malaysia’s pledge toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and contributes directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 9, 13, and 14).
Where Science and Industry Converge
At the heart of this collaboration lies a shared commitment to eco-engineering excellence.
CEMACS will lead in research, field deployment, and ecological monitoring, while CIMA brings decades of industrial expertise in low-carbon and sustainable building materials.
“These are not just concrete blocks—these are living structures that embody our belief that science-based solutions can, and must, define the future,” said Professor Dato’ Dr. Aileen Tan Shau Hwai, Director of CEMACS.
“Together, we are building infrastructure that respects the ocean and empowers communities. This is how we lead,” she said.
The marine concrete modules – modelled after nature-based forms – will be tested in local coastal environments, aiming to promote marine colonisation, reduce carbon footprint, and adapt to diverse coastal conditions.
The project also includes components of education and public awareness, fostering a culture of sustainability in Penang and beyond.
Legacy, Leadership, and Lasting Impact
This initiative honours the legacy of the late Professor Dato’ Dr. Zulfigar Yasin, whose pioneering work at CEMACS championed ecosystem-based marine solutions.
His vision helped lay the groundwork for this forward-looking partnership.
The project also benefits from the support of key national leaders, including Dato’ Zaiviji Ismail (Chairman of CIMA), YB Datuk Ir. A. Rajendran (Mayor of Penang Island), the Chief Minister, and the Governor of Penang – testament to its broad institutional backing.
Investing in People and the Planet
More than a research programme, this is a national capacity-building effort.
It will involve postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and technical teams, offering hands-on experience in applied marine innovation.
This collaboration between CEMACS and CIMA sets a benchmark for how academia and industry can co-create transformative solutions – bridging research with real-world application.
