USM SoLLaT PROMOTES SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH CREATIVE GLASS BOTTLE UPCYCLING WORKSHOP

The Sustainability Unit of the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation (SoLLaT), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently organised a Glass Bottle Painting Workshop, combining sustainability awareness with artistic expression in a relaxed and engaging setting.

The workshop, conducted by Language Teacher, Siti Hasnah Zainal Abidin, was held at Building D35, SoLLaT and attracted participants interested in exploring creative ways to repurpose used materials.

To support the activity, Siti Hasnah provided a variety of art and craft materials, including paintbrushes, waterproof pens, acrylic paints, and decorative strings, while participants brought their own used glass bottles of various sizes for the hands-on session.

According to her, the workshop was organised to encourage recycling practices and nurture creativity through art, while also fostering a positive workplace environment that contributes to good mental well-being.

She added that discarded materials that are recycled can attain greater value when transformed into high-quality and functional creations through upcycling, demonstrating how sustainability and creativity can go hand in hand.

Despite the limited time available, participants successfully completed their individual art pieces with guidance from ideas shared during the workshop and the materials provided.

Among those who took part in the workshop were Siti Rashidah Bahrulddin, Passawee Pongthai, Salwa Abdul Jalil, and Mazlan Hanafi Basharudin.
