USM RECORDS RM3 MILLION IN COMMERCIALISATION VALUE, STRENGTHENING THE NATIONAL INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM

USM PULAU PINANG · 1 October 2026

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) continues to strengthen the national innovation and commercialisation agenda as the commercialisation value from the technology licensing and product sales reached RM3 million in 2025, compared to RM1.22 million in 2024.

This encouraging achievement was celebrated by USM Vice-Chancellor together with USM senior management at the Commercialisation Appreciation Ceremony for the 2024/2025 Assessment Year, held at the VIP Lounge, Level 6, Chancellory Building, USM.

USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, said the achievement is the result of the collective efforts of researchers and university community at various levels in strengthening USM’s innovation and commercialisation ecosystem. According to him, commercialisation efforts should continue to be grounded in USM’s strengths in education and research, while strengthening industry-driven innovation by identifying industry needs and partners from the early stages of research.

“This approach is important to ensure that research outcomes have a clear direction and can be translated into innovations that meet the needs of users and industry,” he added. Abdul Rahman encouraged researchers to focus on specific areas of expertise to enhance the impact of research and strengthen USM’s position in strategic fields. He said that commercialisation should also be viewed from the perspective of social innovation, which provides benefits and meaningful impact to society.

In addition, he emphasised that university-industry relations should be continuously developed to create more opportunities for collaboration in research, consultancy, technology development, and commercialisation. He added, such collaborations should prioritise three key elements, namely integrity, timeliness and quality, to ensure that the outcomes meet industry needs.

Abdul Rahman also said that the recognition is expected to serve as a catalyst for continued efforts to strengthen innovation and commercialisation at USM, thereby translating knowledge and research into innovations that create value and meaningful impact. In the Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) rating, USM also recorded an excellent achievement in Section E – Innovation, portraying the university’s continued efforts to strengthen its innovation and commercialisation ecosystem.

Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, Professor Dr. Habibah A Wahab; Deputy Vice-Chancellor Industry and Community Network, Professor Dato’ Dr. Azlan Amran; Director of Institutional Planning and Strategic Centre (IPSC), Professor Dr. Saidatulakmal Mohd; and Director of the Centre for Innovation and Consultation (CIC), Research and Innovation Division, Professor Dr. Mohd Hazwan Hussin.

The ceremony also witnessed the presentation of the USM Commercialisation Appreciation Awards to 45 recipients in recognition of their contributions towards strengthening the university’s commercialisation agenda.
