Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) once again demonstrated its strong patriotic spirit when 47 staff members from the Main Campus and the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus participated in the Penang State-Level 69th National Day Parade Celebration held at Padang Kota Lama recently.

The USM contingent added vibrancy to the celebration, joining various marching teams, military bands, and vehicle contingents that took part in the event.

Inspired by a warrior-themed concept, the contingent showcased costumes featuring elements of the Penang State Flag and the Jalur Gemilang, symbolising courage, resilience, and unwavering pride in both state and nation.

The participation reflected USM's commitment to nurturing patriotism among its staff while providing an opportunity to celebrate one of the nation’s most significant occasions alongside the wider community.

The contingent was coordinated by Mohamad Shafieq Ishak, Psychology Officer of the Human Resource Division, Registrar’s Department, with strong support from staff members of the Staff Relations and Well-Being Unit as well as the Administration and Finance Unit, Human Resource Division, Registrar’s Department.

Comprehensive preparations were carried out throughout August, including training sessions and rehearsals, to ensure that every participant was well prepared to represent the university with discipline, professionalism, and enthusiasm.

USM Registrar, Mohd Azizudin Mohd Shariff, expressed his appreciation and pride in the dedication shown by staff members who willingly contributed their time and effort to be part of the parade contingent.

“Their participation reflects the strong patriotic spirit and commitment of the USM community. It is more than a symbolic presence. It represents the university’s continuous efforts to promote patriotism and strengthen national pride among its members,” he said.

Mohd Azizudin also extended his gratitude to all parties involved in making the university’s participation a success.

“I sincerely appreciate the commitment and cooperation shown by the Human Resource Division and all participating staff members. This spirit of unity and teamwork demonstrates the strength of the USM community in upholding patriotic values and fostering closer ties with the local community,” he added.

For the staff members involved, participation in the celebration was a meaningful and memorable experience, offering them the opportunity to express their pride as Malaysians and as members of the USM community.

Their involvement further reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to promoting patriotism, strengthening community engagement, and fostering meaningful connections between the campus and society.
