130 EXPERTS GATHER AT USM TO EXPLORE THE FUTURE OF BIOINFORMATICS AND AI
A total of 130 participants gathered at the International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB/ISCB-APAC 2026) hosted by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), showcasing the latest advances in bioinformatics, data science, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Held under the theme “Where Bioinformatics Meets AI: Unlocking the Next Era of Discovery,” the conference brought together researchers, scientists, academics, and industry experts from around the world to exchange ideas and discuss emerging developments in bioinformatics and computational biology.
The conference was officiated by USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, Professor Dr. Habibah A Wahab, who highlighted the growing importance of bioinformatics and AI in driving scientific innovation and discovery.
Over four days, participants explored the integration of AI in genomic data analysis, protein structure modelling, and precision medicine, highlighting how advanced technologies are transforming life sciences research and healthcare.
Key areas discussed included computational genomics and transcriptomics, biodiversity informatics, machine learning, structural and functional bioinformatics, health informatics, data integration, and drug discovery.
The conference featured prominent international and local speakers, including Professor Dr. Kentaro Tomii (Japan), Professor Ana Conesa (Spain), Professor Shandar Ahmad, Professor Dr. Tunku Kamarul Zaman Tunku Zainol Abidin, Dr. Adiratna Mat Ripen, and Professor Dr. Mohd Firdaus Raih.
Beyond knowledge sharing, InCoB/ISCB-APAC 2026 strengthened research links between USM and international institutions while fostering new collaborations across the Asia-Pacific region.
The conference also reinforced Malaysia's growing profile as a hub for international academic and scientific engagement in bioinformatics, genomics, and AI.
Held from 14 to 17 September 2026, the conference was jointly organised by USM, the University of Malaya, the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNET), the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), and the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Network (COMBIONE).
The programme also included poster presentations, networking sessions, and a cultural visit around Penang, providing participants with opportunities to connect and exchange ideas beyond the conference hall.
