PENANG, December 2016 – A team from the School of Management (SoM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) – Mavericks which comprised of Kooi Shiu Lun, Sunisa A/P Ai Som Chok and Lim Kean Wooi became the champion of the Accounting Students Quiz-Degree Level in conjunction with the MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week 2016 held in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) recently.

USM was also the champion in last year’s quiz.

The SoM Dean, Professor Dr. Fauziah Md Taib said that, winning it for 2 years in a row has given those at SoM an achievement they are truly proud of and I would like to congratulate all those involved in preparing the students for the quiz.

"It further reinforced all the indicators that the Bachelor of Accounting degree programme offered by SoM is among the best in the world because it is a highly competitive programme," she said.

She explained, the percentage of marketability for accounting graduates was 92% in 2015, with many of the accounting students passing the professional examinations in their first attempt.
 
"Accounting students are capable of generating RM30,000 on average yearly by conducting the Accountants Professional Avenue, which has succeeded in attracting international and regional participation," she added.

This quiz consisted of 2 rounds, namely the preliminary and the final rounds. In the preliminary round, the participants were tested on their knowledge in Accounting and Auditing, Taxation, Company and Commercial Law, Commercial Knowledge and General Knowledge.

Four teams qualified for the final round, including teams from Universiti Malaya (UM), Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) as well as USM.

With the aggregate score of 44 points, Mavericks emerged as the winner. 

One of the members of Mavericks, Lim Kean Wooi, also managed to bring home the award of the Individual Highest Score for the preliminary round.

The MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week is an annual event organised by the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) especially for students who are interested in pursuing a career in accounting to learn more about the profession.

The theme this year is ‘Unlock a World of Infinite Possibilities.’

Meanwhile, another team - Saibaidee, which consisted of Foo Li May, Poh Mei Xin, Yap Wen Yee, Oon Ying Ci and Kok Jing Yi, also became the runner-up of the Telematch, another competition held during the MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week 2016.
