USM, PENANG, 15 September 2016 – A lecturer from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Biological Sciences, Dr. Nethia Mohana has been selected to be the recipient of the research grant from L'oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science National Fellowship 2016 valued at RM30,000.

She was chosen by a jury appointed by L'oreal last August among 139 researchers who have applied, and viewed the application as being very significant and interesting.

The award presentation ceremony would be held in early October in Kuala Lumpur.

“The grant which I have received will be used for research into the prevention of cancer, on which I have conducted research for the past three years,” said Nethia.

She added that, L'oreal also acknowledges young female researchers in Malaysia who are intensifying research in various other areas.

“USM has fully supported me continually and provided an environment that is conducive to nurture many other world-class researchers,” she said, being also one of the three candidates who had received the ‘MAKNA Cancer Research Award 2015’ research grant.

The L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science National Fellowship, which was introduced in 2006, acknowledges Malaysian female scientific researchers who have made significant contributions to the areas of science in the country.

Since it was launched, the research grant has been awarded to 32 outstanding female researchers in Malaysia.
