USM LEGAL ADVISOR SOLE REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA AT IIEP

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Legal Advisor and Certified Integrity Officer (CeIO), Khairul Anuar Che Azmi has made the university and the country proud by becoming the sole representative to be offered an invitation by the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), an institution under UNESCO based in Paris, to present a working paper based on his experience and expertise.

Khairul Anuar was one of the panelists who presented a working paper on the topic: “Anti-Corruption Units at University Level - How Effective Are They”.

He was extended the invitation by IIEP to represent the universities in Malaysia.

According to Khairul Anuar, during the session, of which he was a panelist together with the Vice-Chancellor from the University of Nairobi, he shared his experiences on the functions and the role of the Integrity Unit at USM, the CeIO programme, the Ombudsman and the USM Integrity Plan alongside other participants from European countries, the United States of America and international organisations including Transparency International. 

“I am grateful and proud to have been honoured and given this chance to go on behalf of the university and the country to this important world meeting,” Khairul Anuar said.

The international forum on the Planning Of Higher Education Integrity was held from 18 to 20 March 2015 in Paris, France.

In the forum, participants shared their views on the management risks of integrity at their respective national higher education/organisational level, each one discussing current and future challenges while evaluating the capabilities of monitoring mechanisms and experiences from the nations invited, at the same time sharing the knowledge on new, innovative initiatives to raise the standards of ethics, integrity and reducing the chances for frauds or bribery to be committed at the higher education level.

“The participants too shared inputs and their experiences especially in the implementation of adequate strategies on the prevention, detection and reduction of corruption risks,” added Khairul Anuar.

Those involved include high-ranking officers, decision-makers and administrators having high responsibilities in higher education, Rectors and university Vice-Chancellors as well as academicians who are involved in integrity initiatives, officials who are involved in audits, quality assurance, accreditation bodies and representatives from youth movements and civil-society organisations which are active in integrity issues.
