USM KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PROGRAMME (KTP) RECEIVED PRESTIGIOUS MELAKA GREEN AWARD 2016

MELAKA, 13 August 2016 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP) is proud to have been awarded the Melaka Green Award 2016 for academic collaborations in a ceremony held here yesterday.

USM Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) Director, Professor Dr. Haslan Abu Hassan said, this Special Award was given to recognise KTP’s significant contribution in assisting the Melaka Green Technology Corporation (MGTC) and the Melaka State Government to implement six Green Technology activities.

"These activities included the vermicomposting of vegetable waste programme at the Melaka market, improving air quality at Melaka General Hospital, efficient energy use in secondary schools in Melaka, converting waste oil into biodiesel project and using solar heat in the fish drying industry," he said.

Haslan added that all the activities were aimed at creating a green environment such as reducing the disposal of vegetables to landfill, improving air quality, energy conservation and the use of renewable energy.

“Three projects began in 2014 while another three commenced the following year, and it is hoped that through these activities we can contribute to a healthier sustainable environment for the community in Melaka,” he further explained.

The National KTP Secretariat under the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) is chaired by USM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato' Dr. Omar Osman with Professor Dr. Haslan Abu Hassan as its Secretary.

The Secretariat is based in USM operating from its office at the TORAY-USM building, and the committee is made up of the members from other Public Universities.

The prestigious Melaka Green Award 2016 was awarded by the Chief Minister of Melaka YAB Datuk Seri Ir. Hj. Idris Hj. Haron.

The Melaka Green Technology Corporation (MGTC), formerly known as the Hang Tuah Jaya Corporation, is the agency responsible for spearheading green technology initiatives in the state of Melaka.
