USM TO OFFER OFFSHORE PROGRAMME WITH MALAYSIAN NUCLEAR AGENCY

PENANG, 30 May 2016 – The School of Physics (PPSF) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) would offer an offshore Master in Science (Radiation Science) degree programme with the Malaysian Nuclear Agency in Bangi beginning this September.

Speaking to reporters after the officiating ceremony on the course entitled “Overview and Key Topics in the World Nuclear Industry Today” recently, the Dean of PPSF Professor Dr. Mohamad Suhaimi Jaafar said that, the programme is the outcome of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between USM and the Malaysian Nuclear Agency the previous year.

“From this programme, USM stands to gain in terms of the PPSF lecturers would be able to contribute their expertise and knowledge in this field at the Asia-Pacific level.

“This mixed-mode programme could also be further enhanced and be able to position USM’s image of excellence at the regional level,” said Mohamad Suhaimi who is the academic coordinator for this collaboration project.

He further added, the lecturers and teaching staff is currently undergoing training at the Malaysian Nuclear Agency in preparation for the programme to begin, and it is hoped that the future graduates of this programme would be well-prepared and ready for the industry.

“Similar programme would also be conducted together with Nagaoka University of Technology Japan for 2 years and also the Master in Engineering (Nuclear Safety) once the programme with the Malaysian Nuclear Agency has commenced,” he further explained.

Earlier the Deputy Director-General (Research and Development) Malaysian Nuclear Agency officiated at the opening ceremony of the “Overview and Key Topics in the World Nuclear Industry Today” course.

The course was jointly-organised by MARPA (Malaysian Radiation Protection Association) and WNU (World Nuclear University) and supported by the Malaysian Nuclear Agency and USM as the local hosts.

It is designed to enhance the knowledge of attendees about the status of nuclear energy in the world today and its likely development, besides inspiring attendees to further their career in this exciting and expanding field.

The course was attended by more than 60 participants from 22 countries around the world, mainly those from the national nuclear research centres, governmental bodies, university students and academia from the related field.
