USM, PENANG, 6 May 2016 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman congratulated three USM academicians who were recently appointed as new Fellows of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM).

They are former Dean of School of Housing, Building and Planning, Professor Datuk Ir Dr. Mahyuddin Ramli; former Dean of School of Physics, Professor Dr. Zainuriah Hassan; and former Dean of School of Chemical Sciences, Professor Dr. Wan Ahmad Kamil Che Mahmood.

They were among 25 scientists, engineers and outstanding technological experts of the country who were appointed as new ASM fellows in recognition of their expertise and significant contributions in the fields of science, technology and innovation (STI) at both national and international levels.

The announcement of the new ASM fellows was made by the ASM President, Tan Sri Dr. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali, in conjunction with its 21st Annual General Meeting which was held on April 30, 2016.

Currently Professor Dr. Wan Ahmad Kamil holds the post of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Excellence) while Professor Dr. Zainuriah is the Director of Institute of Nano Optoelectronics Research and Technology (INOR).

Commenting on their latest achievement, Omar, who is on a working trip in the Czech Republic, described ASM’s appointment as very meaningful to USM as it is the highest recognition given to researchers and academicians who have made outstanding contributions to their respective field in charting and sustaining the nation’s development.

“I hope that this will spur them to contribute further their energy, expertise and experience to various ASM strategic researches, programmes and activities, and in helping to foster a culture of excellence in the development of STI," said Omar.

ASM was established under the Academy of Sciences Act 1994 and was officially inaugurated by then Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on Sept 8, 1995.

With the latest appointment, ASM’s academic expertise has now been expanded to 27 senior fellows, 303 other fellow members, 32 associate members, 51 new young scientists and 110 outstanding research scientists.
