USM Unveils New Bus Initiative to Enhance Campus Transportation
8 June 2024
GEORGE TOWN, June 8 – The Chairman of the Board of Governors of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin, today inaugurated the new USM 5550 bus. This initiative arose from a student proposal during a meeting with Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Temu Anwar program at USM on June 11, 2023. The Prime Minister endorsed the suggestion to replace the aging bus fleet and requested USM to procure three new buses, resulting in today’s official handover of the USM 5550 bus.
This initiative prioritizes optimizing bus operations by replacing the old fleet, ensuring safer and more comfortable transportation for students and staff, and enhancing the university’s image. Buses have long been a primary mode of transport within the university, crucial for teaching and learning activities. By addressing high traffic levels and encouraging bus use over private vehicles, USM aims to improve campus mobility. The university plans to extend this initiative to its Engineering and Health campuses, with new buses expected by December 2024 or January 2025.
