PENANG – Recognising the utmost importance of STEM-based education, S P Setia Foundation, the charitable arm of S P Setia Berhad, collaborates with the Geological Society of Malaysia (GSM) to inspire students and Asnaf orphans with a programme titled ‘Jom STEM: Geotalk with GMS’ in conjunction with PNB’s week-long Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia held at Setia Fontaines, Bertam, Penang. The programme included an introduction to what Geology is about and mini workshops for the participants to experience first-hand activities.

Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi bin Haji Abdul Razak, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, graced the occasion, adding a special touch to the programme as he greeted and interacted with the students and Asnaf. The event was also attended by esteemed individuals such as YB Tuan Rashidi bin Zinol, EXCO Pulau Pinang, YB. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad bin Abdul Hamid, Timbalan Ketua Menteri 1, Pulau Pinang, Dato’ Law Choo Kiang, Speaker Kerajaan, YM Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, Group Chairman of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn, President and Group CEO of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, Datuk Choong Kai Wai, President and Chief Executive Officer of S P Setia Berhad, Tengku Dato’ Ab. Aziz bin Tengku Mahmud, non-independent non-executive director of S P Setia Berhad, and Tan Sri Dr Nik Norzrul Thani Nik Hassan Thani, Interim Chairman of S P Setia Foundation.

Expressing his commitment to supporting underprivileged students, Tan Sri Dr Nik Norzrul shares, “S P Setia Foundation is dedicated to providing educational support to the underprivi. Thus, we are honoured to host today’s STEM workshop with the participants at MSAM 2023. Geology, a captivating and substantial subject, serves as an integral part of this programme, integrating various scientific disciplines.”

This initiative is a significant collaboration between Setia Foundation and the Geological Society of Malaysia (GSM) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Building upon the successful partnership with GSM at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) during the ‘Sincerely, Setia Volunteer Weekend’ in Sabah, Datuk Yuslina Mohd Yunus, Management Committee of S P Setia Foundation and Senior Executive Vice President of S P Setia Berhad, expresses the pleasure to join forces with GSM once again, this time in Penang. The aim is to raise STEM awareness among students and Asnaf orphans and provide them with valuable Geology knowledge beyond traditional classroom boundaries.

 More than 30 asnaf students from SJK(C) Lee Chee and SJK(T) Palaniandy, along with orphans from Inapan Kasih Sayang were empowered through Geology talks and workshops at MSAM 2023, Setia Fontaines, Bertam, Penang.

The ‘Jom STEM: GeoTalk with GSM’ event inspired over 30 students from SJK(C) Lee Chee and SJK(T) Palaniandy and Asnaf orphans from Inapan Kasih Sayang. Esteemed professors and lecturers from GSM USM shared their expertise and showcased job opportunities in Geology, inspiring the young students’ interest in pursuing STEM careers. Moreover, the students and Asnaf orphans actively participated in hands-on activities, including an intriguing archaeology workshop and a captivating demonstration on petroleum generation.

Highlighting the holistic approach of S P Setia Foundation, Adelene Wong, Management Committee of S P Setia Foundation and Head of Group Branding & Communications of S P Setia Berhad, states, “We firmly believe in comprehensive and sustainable solutions that go beyond temporary monetary relief when it comes to assisting communities in need. We aim to provide educational assistance or equip them with essential skills, enabling them to secure a better future for themselves and their families.

This programme falls under the foundation’s commitment to promote STEM education and outreach, in line with its goal of advancing education among disadvantaged students in Malaysia. Furthermore, the programme’s support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 13 (Climate Change), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), further emphasises the Foundation’s dedication to creating a better and brighter future for all.
