Penang is set to host the 6th World Conference on Marine Biodiversity (WCMB) in 2023. This global event organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Penang, Malaysia, has been selected as the host city for the prestigious 6th World Conference on Marine Biodiversity (WCMB) to be held from 2 to 5 July 2023.

Organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia, this global event will bring together prominent scientists, researchers, policymakers, and industry experts who share a common goal of preserving marine biodiversity.

Showcasing commitment to marine conservation

The WCMB 2023 provides an exceptional opportunity for Penang to showcase its unwavering dedication to marine conservation, research, and sustainable practices. With a diverse range of sessions, special symposiums, and panel discussions, the conference will allow attendees to explore emerging technologies, cutting-edge research, and successful case studies in marine conservation and resource management.

According to Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), being selected as the host city is an honour that recognizes Penang’s commitment to marine biodiversity conservation and research. The insights gained from this global gathering will inspire further research, innovation, and sustainable practices, solidifying Penang’s position as a leading hub for marine conservation.

Economic impact and future prospects of the conference

The WCMB 2023 is expected to generate an estimated economic impact (EEI) of MYR 3.2 million and attract more than 400 delegates, with 70% coming from international participants. Science conferences have proven to be significant contributors to Penang’s economy, with previous events generating approximately MYR 40 million from 8,056 delegates.

The long-term effects of WCMB 2023 will extend far beyond the conference itself. The knowledge shared, research presented, and collaborations formed during the event will foster further innovation in marine biodiversity conservation. This will position Penang as a recognized centre of excellence in the field, attracting investments, partnerships, and scientific talent.

Penang’s selection as the first-ever host city in Malaysia and ASEAN for the WCMB signifies the recognition of its strong commitment to marine biodiversity conservation.

Additionally, the conference will coincide with the next General Assembly of the International Association for Biological Oceanography (IABO), further solidifying Penang’s status as a global hub for marine research and conservation.
