LANGKAWI: The Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju) channeled RM21.25 million funds to Bumiputera entrepreneurs in this island, creating 600 jobs last year.

Prime Minister's Department deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohammad Ismail said the funds were distributed to finance 10 development projects in Langkawi.

"The allocations were distributed under the Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Development Fund, Facilitation Fund and Bumiputera Prosperity Fund.

"The projects have created a favourable impact with the creation of 600 jobs," he told reporters after attending an engagement session by Teraju here today.

Present was Teraju chief executive officer Datuk Md Silmi Abd Rahman.

Mohammad said the projects' funding was also meant to spur the Langkawi tourism sector by creating new tourism products.

During the programme, entrepreneurs who had benefited from the funds displayed their products besides sharing their experiences with the visitors.

"Among the success stories being showcased here is a project to improve an integrated seaweed and lobster multi trophic aquaculture project by Universiti Sains Malaysia.

"We also have here the development of an international standard resort based on a private villa concept and the redevelopment of Malaysian Books Village," he said.
