ALOR SETAR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) is taking steps to recognise and provide training for university students to obtain skills certificates thus giving them added value.
Its chairman, Datuk Rizalman Mokhtar said the corporation established a partnership with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) which is the only public institution of higher learning (IPTA) in the country that has a solid waste management cluster.
He said final-year engineering students at USM will take the Malaysian Skills Certificate through the National Dual Training System (SLDN).
"The certificate programme began on May 1, 2022 and will finish in December this year. USM students involved in this certificate programme will undergo the theory part in USM and will undergo training at concessionaire companies beginning today till Oct 21," he told reporters after the launch of the SLDN practical training for the skills certification here today.
For the record, the Solid Waste Training Centre (SWTC), an SLDN Training Centre, that was established by SWCorp has collaborated with the Department of Skills Development (JPK), Ministry of Human Resources to adopt the SLDN method for the Malaysian Skills Certification System.
Rizalman said the strategic partnership between SWCorp and USM involves a collaboration among the corporation’s three concessionaires namely Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd and SWM Environment Sdn Bhd.
"At the end of this programme, these USM students will be awarded the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) in Supervising Solid Waste Collection Operations Level 3 in addition to holding their respective engineering degrees.
"SKM and industry experience will also be added value to these students in their preparations to enter the working world," he added.
