USM AND SABAH PARKS FORGE ALLIANCE TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

SABAH, 20 January 2024 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through the Centre for Global Sustainable Studies (CGSS) and the Board of Trustees of Sabah Parks recently formalised a collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

At the signing ceremony which took place in Kota Belud, Sabah, USM was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Industry and Community Network, Professor Dr. Azlan Amran, and Director of CGSS, Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Wira Mohd Shafiei, while Sabah Parks was represented by its Director, Dr. Maklarin Bin Lakim.

The alliance, initiated by academic Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Sayuti Hassan from CGSS, aims to explore and utilise opportunities that would mutually benefit both institutions across various aspects.

By pooling resources and expertise, USM and Sabah Parks envision making significant contributions to future research, education, and training programmes.

The MoU underscores the commitment of both institutions to initiate collaborative efforts in abovementioned areas.

Key aspects include facilitating the exchange of information, jointly organizing continuing education programmes, collaborating on events like seminars and conferences, proposing and engaging in sponsored research or training programmes, and exploring collaboration in other fields agreed upon by both parties.

As outlined in the MoU, the overarching objectives of this collaboration are to develop, support, and enrich research, educational, and training programmes.

The partners aim to explore opportunities that will be beneficial to both participants, while operating within the framework of the MoU and adhering to relevant laws, rules, regulations, and national policies.

This collaboration signifies a strategic partnership that harnesses the strengths of both USM and the Board of Trustees of Sabah Parks. This will surely facilitate the move to create a more conducive environment for the advancement of knowledge and sustainable development.

The strategic alliance is expected to set new standards for collaborative initiatives in academia that will emerge from synergies between both parties. Ultimately, the move would lead towards making a lasting impact on research, education, and sustainable development.
