USM PENANG, 26 December 2023 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has always voiced its concerns regarding the suffering of the Palestinian people due to the current conflict occurring in the country.

As the conflict, which has become more serious, has resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of properties and also injuries and disabilities to the people of the country, USM has taken the initiative to continue extending aid to the Palestinian students at USM, and aligning with the move made by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) in supporting any form of solidarity shown to the students from Palestine studying in this country.

With regard to that, as a continuation of the RM250,000 aid extended by the University authorities to the People of Palestine Emergency Humanitarian Mission Fund launched by KPT, USM deemed that it would be appropriate for the University to extend further assistance to the Palestinian students at USM as a sign of support for them.

The aid given is intended to lessen the burden of the Palestinian students at USM, whom are truly affected by the turmoil in Gaza.

The University hopes that the aid could lighten the burden of the affected students emotionally and financially as they continue their studies at USM.

Through this agenda, the USM Humanitarian Fund Committee chaired by Professor Dr. Md. Roslan Hashim has confirmed the provision of RM2,000 per person to the 53 Palestinians who are pursuing their studies here at USM, by which the proposal has received the support and approval of the Vice-Chancellor.

A simple ceremony was held on 18 December 2023 in the campus, where the USM Board of Governors Chairman, Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin handed over the mock cheques to five Palestinian students who were present.

The USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed and Deputy Vice-Chancellors also attended the ceremony.
