IPO2023 - FOSTERING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND CULTURAL CONNECTION AT USM
USM PENANG, 18 December 2023 - The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) International Mobility and Collaboration Centre (IMCC) recently hosted the USM International Postgraduate Orientation 2023 programme, to celebrate the significance of global academic collaboration and cultural exchange.
This event served as a platform to welcome and to guide the international postgraduate students, fostering a sense of community and support as they embark on their academic journeys at USM.
The orientation programme featured a diverse range of activities aimed at acclimating participants to the university’s academic environment, as well as providing valuable insights into the local culture and resources that can be found on campus.
From informative sessions on academic policies and resources to cultural immersion activities, the programme sought to ensure that international students would feel well-prepared and integrated into the USM community.
IMCC Director, Associate Professor Dr. Muhizam Mustafa in his welcoming speech expressed his sincere gratitude to the international postgraduate students who were in attendance there.
He emphasised the trust that the students demonstrated by choosing USM, highlighting the university’s distinguished reputation for delivering high-quality education and enriching experiences.
“USM's scholars and researchers are leaders in their fields, and they're not just here to impart knowledge, but they are also here to inspire, challenge, and guide you toward academic excellence. Get to know them, for in their mentorship lies the pathway to your success,” he said.
Meanwhile, Shrouq, a 32 year-old from Jordan who enrolled in the USM School of Civil Engineering, shared that her decision to choose USM was based on the university's esteemed reputation.
"USM's renowned reputation in the academic realm was the driving force behind my choice. The university's commitment to excellence in education and its impactful contributions to various fields made it the clear destination for my academic pursuits,” she said.
Following this, IMCC USM Deputy Director (Global Engagement and Network), Dr. Syaheerah Lebai Lutfi, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the norms, customs and etiquette practised at USM. Her sharing of insights was aimed to equip students with the necessary knowledge to navigate the cultural landscape at USM with respect and cultural sensitivity.
The event was further enriched with a captivating cultural dance performance, strategically included to offer international students a vivid and immersive experience of Malaysia's rich cultural tapestry.
This thoughtful addition aimed to deepen their appreciation for the diverse traditions and heritage of the country, fostering a global understanding within the academic community.
