UnHAR VISITS USM, PRESENTS TALK AT PPBLT

UnHAR VISITS USM 1

USM PENANG, 5 July 2023 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today welcomed a delegation from Universitas Harapan Medan (UnHar), Indonesia.

Led by its Rector, Professor Dr. Sriadhi, the delegation visited USM for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the USM Centre for Instructional Technology and Multimedia (PTPM). The MoU was signed by both universities on Tuesday.

In conjunction with the signing, the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation (PPBLT) hosted a talk by two presenters from UnHar. 

A total of 47 participants, including the staff and students of both UnHar and USM joined the talk, held in both physical and hybrid session. 

The first presenter, Ms. Mayasari (S. Pd., M.Si), presented on the social context of the Malay text ‘Mak Yong’ in a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). She explained the importance of using the SFL theory from Halliday as the text is lacking from that perspective.

This research highlighted the result with useful information shared in descriptive form. She also explained the social contexts that were successfully utilised to extract and analyse the text, namely the Situation Context, Cultural Context and Ideology Context.

The following presenter, Mr. Zuindra (S.S., M.S.) shared on the Ideological Representation on Visual Language Metafunctions In ‘Ketoprak Dor’ Performances from North Sumatra.

The multimodal technique and the idea of ideological representations in visual language were applied to the study's analysis of ideological components such social concepts, pictures and values. It was determined from the analysis that the forms in the performances contained moral messages.
