USM PENANG, 29 June 2023 – The celebration of Hari Raya Aidiladha at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Main Campus today was marked by a simple yet deeply spiritual atmosphere, with an emphasis on faith and devotion in a peaceful environment.
The day began with the Aidiladha Sunat Prayer, attended by over 1,000 USM community, worshippers, members of the public, and international students, creating a festive ambiance and fostering a sense of family unity during this year’s celebration.
Ustaz Nukman Ahmad Zakir, the Religious Officer, delivered the Aidiladha sermon titled “Hayati dan Syukuri” (Live and Be Grateful), emphasising the importance of gratitude in one’s life.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, called upon all USM community to remain grateful for the blessings they have received and to continue appreciating the significance of sacrifice, regardless of the challenges they may face.
“To all USM community, let us be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us and continue to embrace the spirit of sacrifice, no matter the obstacles that come our way,” he stated, while extending heartfelt Aidiladha greetings to all USM community and the entire Muslim community.
One of the highlights of this year’s Aidiladha celebration was the unique inclusion of a sado cow of the Charolis breed weighing 750 kg, along with 20 cows and 20 goats, for the sacrificial ritual known as Qurban.
Hari Raya Aidiladha is commemorated by Muslims worldwide to honour the event of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his willingness to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismail (AS), as a testament to his obedience to Allah SWT.
However, Allah SWT replaced Prophet Ismail with a sheep (kibas) for sacrifice, signifying the end of the Hajj season in Mecca.
The celebration at USM exemplified the essence of Aidiladha, fostering a spirit of gratitude, humility, and unity among the USM community as they gathered to commemorate this significant occasion.
