LONG BEACH, CA, 13 – 15 June 2023 – Chew Ho Kin, a committee member from the American Chemical Society, Universiti Sains Malaysia International Student Chapter (ACS USM), recently participated in the 27th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference organised by the ACS Green Chemistry Institute. The conference, which took place in the vibrant city of Long Beach, California, provided a platform for critical discussions and knowledge exchange on sustainable chemistry practices.

ACS USM was selected as one of the recipients of the ACS Student Communities Professional Meeting Grants. The grant facilitated his participation in the conference. Under the theme of “Closing the Loop: Chemistry for a Sustainable Future,” the conference successfully brought together leading experts, industry professionals, researchers and students from around the world. Throughout the conference, a diverse range of topics were discussed, emphasising the importance of life cycle thinking and its implementation across the field of chemistry. He also actively participated in various sessions, workshops and networking events.

According to him, “I had a highly valuable experience attending the 27th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference. The discussions and ideas exchanged during the conference increased my understanding of sustainable chemistry practices and also motivated me to make a positive impact within my academic community and the university. I am grateful for the opportunity given.”

He also took the opportunity to discover the vibrant city life and explore iconic landmarks of Los Angeles, CA with amazing friends he met during the conference. His participation in the conference is a testament to the unwavering commitment of ACS USM and the university in promoting sustainable practices and the cultivation of student empowerment in driving transformative advancements within the field. By actively engaging in global platforms like this conference, the student chapter and university continue to establish its reputation as a leader in the field of STEM.
