USM-TETFUND MOU TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO QUALITY HIGHER EDUCATION FOR NIGERIAN ACADEMICS
PENANG, 13 June 2023 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has entered into a partnership with Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) from Nigeria to provide access to quality higher education for TETFund sponsored lecturers by providing scholarships to Nigerian scholars studying in USM.
The partnership was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in a ceremony earlier today at the Division of Academic and International Meeting Room, Level 2, USM Chancellory Building.
Signing on behalf of USM was the International Strategy Coordinator, Division of Academic and International who represented USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Hazizan Md. Akil and on behalf of TETFund was its Director, Academic Staff Training and Development, Mr. Adamu Abubakar.
According to Hazizan, USM firmly believes that education knows no borders and the university aims to be a hub of excellence to attract students from all corners of the globe.
“At present, USM has 339 active students from Nigeria and from that number, 120 are under TETFund sponsorship, and we hope to see more Nigerian students grace our campus in the future and bring their unique perspectives, ideas and talents to the forefront,” he added.
Through this MoU, scholarships offered to lecturers from Nigeria through the TETFund will be for studies in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), with other disciplines to be decided by TETFund from time to time.
Meanwhile, Adamu Abubakar believed that the MoU will further strengthen the relationship between both sides and will attract a lot more people from Nigeria to further their studies here.
Also present were the Coordinator of USM LEAP, Professor Dr. Lee Keat Teong and Assistant Director, Academic Staff Training and Development, TETFund, Mr. Mohammed Garba Sabonsara.
