UNITING CULTURES THROUGH THE COLOURFUL BEATS OF BHANGRA 2.0

The Sikh Students Society (PPS) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) hosted the Beats of Bhangra (BoB) 2.0 today to showcase the rich and vibrant culture of the Punjabis through the power of Bhangra. This cultural event serves as a testament to the students' commitment in celebrating diversity and promoting cultural understanding within USM and the wider community.
The aim of this programme is to create an unforgettable experience that showcases both traditional and modern elements of Punjabi culture, including traditional dance performances, captivating music, and mouth-watering food, while fostering understanding and appreciation.
Held at Dewan Budaya USM, the officiating ceremony was graced with the presence of the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Ramkarpal Singh.
During his officiating speech, Ramkarpal highlighted that Punjabi culture is one of the many beautiful cultures that make up our world, as it is rich in history, music, dance and food.
"It is encouraged for everyone to learn more about the Punjabi culture that was showcased, and let us use this occasion to renew our commitment towards working together, building a stronger and more prosperous Malaysia," he said.
He also encouraged the crowd to enjoy the evening and to later leave with splendid memories.
"Let loose, have fun, and let us learn more about this amazing culture!" he added.
Meanwhile, Professor Dr. Azlan Amran, the USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Industry, Community Network, and Institutional Sustainability, who is also exercising the function of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Development Affairs and Alumni, emphasized in his speech that events like this provide us with an incredible opportunity to experience and appreciate the beauty of different cultures within each community.
"The BoB 2.0 event aligns perfectly with our institution's goals, as it allows us to celebrate the cultural diversity that exists within our university and community. Through this event, we could promote understanding, respect, and appreciation for the Punjabi culture while also fostering a sense of unity among our students, as I can see diversity in this crowd today," said Azlan.
According to BoB 2.0 Project Director, Harpreet Kaur in her speech, "In this moment, we stand together united by our love for our culture. Let us embrace our diversity, celebrate our differences, and find joy in our shared experiences."
"Thank you for joining us in our celebration of the Beats of Bhangra 2.0. Let the beats dance within you, let the rhythm move your soul, and let the spirit of Punjab captivate your heart," said Harpreet.
A total of 15 performances were presented, and over 400 attendees attended the event.
Also present were the Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri Sungai Bakap, Pulau Pinang, Dato' Dr. Amar Pritpal Abdullah; Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri Batu Uban, Pulau Pinang, Kumaresan Aramugam; Wife of the late Dato’ Seri Karpal Singh, Datin Seri Utama Gurmit Kaur; Advisor of the USM Sikh Students Society, Dr. Darshan Singh Mahinder Singh; Chairperson of the USM Sikh Students Society, Alka Kaur and committee members of BoB 2.0.
