USM CEMACS DIRECTOR APPOINTED AS VICE-CHAIR FOR UNESCO INTERGOVERNMENTAL OCEANOGRAPHIC COMMISSION OF WESTERN PACIFIC
PENANG, 7 April 2023 - The Director of Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Aileen Tan Shau Hwai has been appointed for the 2nd term as the Vice-Chair of UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of Western Pacific.
The Vice-Chancellor and all communities of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) are wishing the best for this appointment and hoping that Aileen will keep on gaining success in her respective field.
Professionally, her field of expertise is in marine sciences, specialising in mariculture and conservation of molluscs. She was the first female president of the UNITAS Malacologica (the society for worldwide study of mollusca) based in Belgium, from 2013 to 2016.
She is the first to successfully culture oysters from eggs and sperms through artificial spawning. Her work on oysters, as featured on the website of World Oyster Society, has gained vast recognition, not only in Malaysia but internationally.
To date, she has published more than 100 articles in various scientific journals, monographs, proceedings, conferences, and seminars.
