PENANG, 24 Oct. 2022 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is back in winning style with 100% gold medal achievement at the recently concluded International Research and Innovation Symposium and Exposition (RISE) 2022, organised by Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), held virtually from 1 August to 20 October 2022.

The research innovations were those from Dr. Leow Chiuan Herng from INFORMM; Dr. Rohimah Mohamud from the School of Medical Sciences; Dr. Intan Sorfina Zainal Abidin from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Dr. Tuan Nadrah Naim Bt T Ismail @ T Manah and Assoc. Prof. Dr. TP Kannan, both from the School of Dental Sciences.

RISE2022 - USM GOLD MEDALS

1. Dr. Leow Chiuan Herng - Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM); An Advanced Heat Stable mAb Reagent for Malaria Diagnostic.

2. Dr. Rohimah Mohamud - School of Medical Sciences; Stingless Bee Honey-loaded Alginate Nanomaterials for Eczema.

3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. TP Kannan - School of Dental Sciences; HERBA FRESH - An Alcohol-free Herbal-based Mouthwash.

4. Dr. Tuan Nadrah Naim bt T Ismail @ T Manah - School of Dental Sciences; ACNEPOLIS.

5. Dr. Intan Sorfina Zainal Abidin - School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering; LetsTernak System: TERNAK Collar and LetsTernak App.

The five-gold haul was part of the total 61 gold medals up for grab from 212 entries in the 5th edition of RISE2022.

RISE2022 aims to showcase research products from local and international researchers, as well as to being a platform to share ideas relating to innovations and new discoveries for the purpose of commercialisation.

Each entry is evaluated according to three categories, namely Fundamental, Innovation and Commercialisation as well as 12 clusters, namely Environment and Renewable Energy (ERE); Agriculture and Aquaculture (AA); Industrial Design, Building Engineering and Architecture (IDBEE); Disaster Management (DM); Education, Community Development and Social Innovation (ECDSI); Health, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Food and Supplement (HMPFS); Digital Era, Data Analysis and Automation Revolution (DEDAAR); Manufacturing Technologies, Food Processing and Mechanisation (MTFPM); Automobile, Aeronautical and Maritime Technology (AAMT); Tourism, Travel and Tours (TTT); Rural Innovation (RI); and Islamic Innovation (II).
