USM RESEARCHERS SHINE AT MTE SDG 2022 – 100% ACHIEVEMENT ON MEDALS (4 GOLD MEDALS, 1 SILVER, 1 BRONZE, 3 SPECIAL AWARDS)
USM PENANG, 22 October 2022 – Six Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) researchers exuded excellence in winning medals at the Malaysia Technology Expo Sustainable Development Goals (MTE SDG) 2022, which saw the research community's participation locally and abroad.
Innovations from Professor Ir. Dr. Srimala Sreekantan and Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Leo Choe Peng also attracted the attention of the external jury and both of them won a special 'Outstanding Award', while Associate Professor Dr. Raa Khimi Shuib successfully won the 'Euro Special Award' at the MTE SDG exhibition.
The four gold medals resulted from innovations by Dr. Muhammad Firdaus Akbar Jalaludin Khan, Associate Professor Dr. Low Hui Min, Associate Professor Dr. Raa Khimi Shuib and Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Leo Choe Peng.
Apart from the four-gold haul, USM also took home 1 silver and 1 bronze medal, hence maintaining the university's 100% achievement record on overall medal wins.
The 2nd edition of the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2022: SDG International Innovation Awards & Expo was held virtually from 17-21 October 2022.
It focused on recognising innovations, initiatives, programmes and ideas which contribute to sustainability, eradicating poverty, improving well-being, protecting our planet, and building peace and prosperity.
The awards are hoped to encourage the development of innovative solutions for local and global challenges in achieving the 169 SDG objectives.
For the record, 186 innovation entries were shortlisted from 217. Participants hailed from 12 countries namely Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, China, UK, US, Yemen, Arab Saudi, Indonesia, Iran and Malaysia.
Awards participants competed in the 5 main categories, embracing all 17 SDGs: Health and Well Being, Inclusivity, Human Capital, Environment and Natural Resources, and Economic Growth.
