FOUR USM YOUNG SCIENTISTS AMONG SIX REPRESENTING MALAYSIA AT 71ST NOBEL LAUREATE MEETING IN GERMANY
USM PENANG, 15 Aug 2022 – Four young scientists from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) were among the six selected who represented Malaysia at the 71st Nobel Laureate meeting in Lindau, Germany, from 26 June until 1 July 2022.
They were Dr. Nur Azzalia Kamaruzaman (National Poison Centre); Dr. Goh Choon Fu (School of Pharmaceutical Sciences); Dr. Enis Nadia Md Yusof (School of Distance Education); and Dr. Oh Wen Da (School of Chemical Sciences).
They were among about 600 young scientists from all over the world who attended the meeting, which was held physically after the 2021 edition was conducted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The interdisciplinary meeting served as the best platform for budding young scientists, who are the country's pioneers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), to build a network with the best scientists at the international level.
They had the privilege to meet Nobel recipients from various science disciplines and share their research work with other young scientists, which in turn may open up opportunities for them to link up with this emerging generation of leading scientists and researchers in world-class research centres and laboratories.
This year’s 71st Nobel meeting was dedicated to the field of chemistry.
Some 35 Nobel Prize winners participated in the meeting, where they presented their research, as well as shared their experiences and career background with other selected young scientists.
The nomination of the Malaysian representatives for the Nobel Meeting is open to all young scientists from public and private institutions of higher learning nationwide. In order to participate in the meeting, they must pass a multi-step application and selection process.
The process is managed by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), which is an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
Malaysia, through ASM, had sent 81 young scientists to participate in the meeting since it was first held in 2004.
