USM VICE-CHANCELLOR RECEIVES VISIT BY MARINE SCIENTISTS FROM CEFAS UK
USM PENANG, 13 July 2022 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan today welcomed delegates from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), UK who arrived for a courtesy visit at The Bricks@USM.
Among those present included scientists from CEFAS, namely Senior Quantitative Marine Ecologist, Dr. Elena Couce; Biogeochemical Oceanographer, Dr. Tom Hull; Principal Scientist Aquaculture, Keith Robert Jeffery, and Business Development Officer, Zeni Tekeli, along with British High Commission Kuala Lumpur Science and Innovation Officer, Poorani Krishnan.
The aim of the visit was to hold discussions on areas of expertise in marine science, explore other aspects for further discussion and potential collaboration, and the possibility of conducting an in-person workshop to outline and structure future partnerships between the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) USM and CEFAS UK.
Among the programme agenda is a visit by CEFAS team to CEMACS to hold a workshop from 12 to 16 July 2022.
During the meeting, Faisal Rafiq gave a briefing regarding the university profile, background, achievements and facilities provided at USM.
“It is hoped that this visit and workshop to be conducted at CEMACS will be a fruitful endeavour in building stronger research and innovation partnership in marine science between the United Kingdom and Malaysia,” said Faisal Rafiq.
Following that, Zeni Tekeli presented on CEFAS and the scientists’ profiles, as well as an overview on each of the scientist’s expertise.
Also present were USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed; Director of CEMACS, Professor Dato’ Dr. Aileen Tan Shau Hwai; School of Biological Sciences senior lecturer, Dr. Noor Khalidah Abdul Hamid; and fellow researchers from CEMACS.
