USM TO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN NEWLY-ESTABLISHED INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL IoT
PENANG, 30 April 2022 – The International Institute of Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), which was jointly established by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Xiamen University of Technology (XMUT), Oppstar Technology and Xiamen KirinCore IoT Technology, was officially unveiled on 22 April 2022 at the Jimei Campus of Xiamen University of Technology, China.
Leaders from the Xiamen Municipal Government, including Xiamen Foreign Affairs Office, Xiamen Education Bureau, Xiamen Industry and Information Technology Bureau and Xiamen Torch Development Zone for High-Tech Industry, and Xiamen Office of the Leading Group for BRICS Innovation Base attended the plaque unveiling ceremony.
XMUT school leaders, staff and student representatives as well as leaders from Oppstar Technology, Xiamen KirinCore IoT Technology, and other industrial leading enterprises also attended the event.
USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Dr. Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan; Director of USM Collaborative Microelectronic Design Excellence Centre (CEDEC), Associate Professor Dr. Asrulnizam Abd Manaf along with representatives from the Centre and Oppstar Technology attended the ceremony on-line.
Faisal Rafiq thanked those involved in making the Joint Institute possible in his welcome address and believed that this university-industry collaboration will significantly deepen academic and research engagement in areas of microelectronics technologies and Internet of Things (IoT).
“It is my fervent hope that this Institute will be able to leverage on the full potential of industrial IoT and equip students with cutting-edge technological and practical knowledge to enable them to stay competitive and relevant in this ever-evolving Industry 4.0 landscape,” he said.
XMUT Secretary of the Communist Party Committee, Lin Jinchuan in his opening speech said that, the establishment of this International Institute would not be possible without the support and dedication of a group of Malaysian engineers from USM, Oppstar Technology and Xiamen KirinCore.
“As a local university, XMUT will work closely with all parties to promote the education and technology cooperation and exchange between sister cities - Penang and Xiamen.
“We will jointly cultivate talents with professional and international perspective, and strive to make the Institute a model of Sino-foreign cooperation, industry-education integration, and university-enterprise collaboration,” he added.
As for the Chief Operating Officer of Oppstar Technology, Tan Chun Chiat, he hoped that this platform would bring in world-class IoT expertise and be a good foundation for the cultivation of talents in the IoT industry.
“Oppstar and Xiamen KirinCore would devote efforts to support the Institute's talent training and scientific research platform construction, and train first-class industrial IoT talents,” he said.
In his welcome address, Hong Jun, the Deputy Director General of Xiamen Education Bureau, congratulated the successful establishment of the Institute and hoped all parties would deepen the international industry-academia-research-application cooperation.
He also believed that the Joint Institute would contribute more technology and wisdom to the economic and social development of Xiamen.
At the end of the ceremony, Xiamen KirinCore IoT Technology, represented by its General Manager, Chen Junhua, awarded a total of RMB 1 million scholarship for students participating in this programme. XMUT Vice President, Professor Wu Keshou, accepted the scholarship on behalf of XMUT.
In November 2021, the four parties signed the agreement of the Joint Institute during the 2021 Maritime Silk Road International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application.
Based on the industrial and educational strengths of Xiamen City and Penang, the Collaborative Institute adopts the mode of industry-university-research cooperation and will strengthen the Sino-Malaysian communication of higher education, scientific research, and industrial cooperation aimed at cultivating students with high level of hands-on abilities to meet the demands of economic and social development.
