USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability and Institutional Development), Professor Dr. Md Roslan Hashim said the incident was most unfortunate and unexpected, and we are all deeply saddened by what had happened.

"USM has taken the necessary measures to ensure safety of all its students, including forming a working team under the USM DVC SID to look into all the student facilities, particularly the student desasiswa to ensure their safety," he said.

Roslan said the team was reviewing all aspects and taking preventive measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

"They will take into account several factors such as the building structure as well as all possibilities in whatever circumstances.

"The university also advises all students to be careful at all times. We will monitor the safety of students from time to time with the help from the desasiswa management and desasiswa residence council," he added.
