OASIS 2022: AN EXHIBITION ON THE SPECTACLE THAT ILLUMINATES THE 5 HUMAN SENSES
USM PENANG, 2 March 2022 – Creative practices require a heightened sensitivity towards the sense of touch, visual, sound, emotions and other sensory which inform the heart and mind in making creative decisions.
The mastery of these heightened sensitivity towards subject and material, concept, perception, and feelings are manifested through creative research and experimentation processes.
This understanding of the senses is highlighted in OASIS 2022: Sensoria @Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah (MGTF) USM, which is an annual showcase of selected creative works by lecturers from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of the Arts.
OASIS 2022 is a delicately-curated showcase of creativity, prepared with lots of care, patience, love and compassion by two academics, Dr. Tetriana Ahmed Fauzi and Dr. Safia Najwa Suhaimi, together with MGTF’s curatorial team.
Sensoria is an exhibition that illuminates beyond man’s five physiological senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, conveying a deeper connection of the physical and mental aspects of the senses, including the sense of surrounding as seen in spectrums of light, materials and nature in relation to the human psyche, awareness as well as man's spirituality.
These aspects and expressions are construed in the form of artworks produced by creative practitioners from the School of the Arts at USM, together with other participants in alliance with USM.
According to MGTF curatorial team, ‘Practice what we preach’ is a credence that creative practitioners always try to emulate as an enactment of their profession.
“This is not a typical fine art (white cube) exhibition. As curators, we have worked together to combine ideas and expertise in the curatorial aspect of the presentation, which includes the enhancement of perception, mood, and visual experience in relation to the overall concept, and the interactive elements of the exhibition,” said the curators.
They further added by saying that they expect many levels of experience, diverse perspectives, and responses from the audience, and they hope that the exhibition can provide a space not only for sensorial encounters, but also reflexive contemplation, exploration and discovery on topics pertinent to the curators' shared interest.
The exhibition at USM MGTF is open to the public at no charge, from 15 February to 15 April 2022, between 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday till Saturday.
It's time to allow all your five senses to experience and embrace the surrounding elements that best attract you.
