PENANG, 25 February 2022 - As current world developments demand immediate information and news dissemination, there is now the trending need for more and swifter content creation and digitilisation.
Realising that such needs would also require regular monitoring and other regulatory practices to ensure the validity and authenticity of each content created, the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Communication, recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Content Forum, an independent self-regulatory body that is registered under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The MoA affirms a three-year collaboration, aimed at exploring opportunities to develop, support and enrich the research activities, educational programmes and training to students in the respective fields of expertise.
“At USM, our mission is to empower our students to become future leaders of their respective industries through various industry partnerships such as this collaboration with Content Forum. I believe that this partnership will be a very beneficial one, not just to our students but also for the industry as a whole,” said USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan at the signing ceremony.
In addition to applying good practices and having professional standards, it is imperative for content creators, especially those in the communication and multimedia industry, to be aware of the importance of content curation and self-regulation.
This is where Content Forum comes in to facilitate the process of providing content education, in areas such as advertising, broadcasting, scriptwriting and journalism among others.
As explained by its Executive Director, Mediha Mahmood, “While we actively engage with present industry players, Content Forum believes that it is also crucial to empower the minds of future industry leaders through collaborations with institutions of higher learning.”
“We hope to initiate and nurture the culture of responsibility and ethical content creation and consumption, while educating the overall importance of content self-regulation from the onset,” she added.
She continued further by saying that university students taking courses in relation to the content industry should be familiarised with the  Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Content Code (Content Code). It is a set of guidelines created by the Content Forum that outlined best practices and ethical standards relating to content creation and consumption across all platforms.
Through the MoA, Content Forum will facilitate the incorporation of the Content Code into relevant academic programmes in USM, in addition to providing training and awareness programmes tailor-made to the needs of the university.
The Content Forum will also serve USM in its advisory capacity on the rules, guidelines and best practices relating to content governance in the country, to be provided through training and awareness programmes that will fulfil the needs of the university.
Also present at the ceremony was the (then) Dean of School of Communication, Dr Nurzali Ismail.
