USM PENANG, 1 February 2022 – The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Professor Dato’ Dr. Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan sends a ‘’Happy Chinese New Year’ greetings to all members of the USM community, alumni, colleagues and stakeholders close to the University.

"Happy Chinese New Year to everyone, from me and the entire top management of USM, as we celebrate in the spirit of being a ‘family’, togetherness and close unity by understanding each other and celebrating the diversity that exists with respect, harmony and prosperity," said Faisal Rafiq.

He added, in this era of the pandemic that restricts some social activities, going online can be the means to communicate with each other, at the same time adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlined by the authorities.

"We are very fortunate to be in a country that is safe and prosperous and comprising of different communities, religions and cultures that are truly unique and to live together and understand each other, and I call upon all of us to pray as we aspire to attain happiness and joy," he said.

The VC also reminded those who will be on leave during this week of celebration to always be careful on the roads and ensure that safety is always maintained.

Chinese New Year marks the beginning of a new year according to the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, and this year the Chinese New Year celebration is celebrated in the year of the Tiger, the third zodiac in the cycle of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.

According to the beliefs of the Chinese community, those born in the year of the Tiger will have the following qualities - independent, brave, confident, dynamic, persistent, energetic, intelligent, willingness to sacrifice, loyal, lovable, kind, idealistic, and has multiple capabilities.
