USM FOOD TECH STUDENTS MAKE WINNING ENTRIES A ‘PIECE OF CAKE’

USM PENANG, 14 August 2021 -- Students from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Industrial Technology have scored yet another sweet victory!

The students, who major in Food Technology (Food Tech), recently took part in the 12th MIFT National Food Science and Technology Competition 2021, organised virtually by Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) on 4-5 August 2021.

Among them was 4th year Food Tech student, Loong Ye Heng, who won 1st Prize in the Undergraduate Impromptu Oratory Competition. His winning entry titled: “Advancement of E-commerce is a Platform for Food Fraud: Agree or Disagree?” won the judges’ hearts over 28 other participants from 15 competing universities.

Next, is a group of seven undergraduate students who won 3rd Prize in the Food Product Development Competition. Led by Suhaila Mohamed, they presented their innovative product: ‘Papaya Chip Cookies’. Other members of the team were Nor Fazliaton, Muhammad Lutfilhadi, Syamilah Nordin, Mardhiah, Nurul Syafira Nabila, and Siti Rafeeqah Shroslee.

Another winning entry came from a PhD student, Harivaindaran K. Veeriah who won 3rd Place in the Postgraduate Research Oral Competition. His winning presentation was titled: “A novel use of torrefacto roasting with superheated steam on black seeds (Nigella sativa)”.

The final winning submission, which also won 3rd Place, came from another PhD student, Siti Rashima Romli. Her entry for the Postgraduate Research Poster - Food Science Category was titled: “Effects of pineapple intakeon human taste threshold”.

According to the Dean, Professor Ts. Dr. Norli Ismail, the achievements could not have been possible without the commitment of all those involved.

The tireless coaching and significant contributions from all academic staff of the Food Tech programme and participation of the students, directly or indirectly, have surely bore fruit,” she said.

In reflecting the multiple wins, she quoted a remark by Edward Everett Hale (an American-Clergyman): “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
