USM URGES ITS STUDENTS TO REMAIN ON CAMPUS, COMPLY WITH EXISTING RULES, HELP FIGHT COVID-19

Assalamualaikum and Greetings.

I trust that all USM students are in the best of health, to remain motivated and united in facing the COVID-19 situation. The University is thankful and appreciates the support and cooperation given by all students throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO) period which has been further extended to April 28th. I take this opportunity also to wish everyone all the best as you venture into online learning which has started in full swing since April 5th.

The Ministry of Health has recently issued a statement urging the Ministry of Higher Education to put on hold any initiatives to allow students in higher learning institutes to return home. Based on this recommendation, we ask for all students to adhere to all existing rules and requirements whereby those who have been staying on campus to remain where they are while those who are in their hometowns are not allowed to return to campus.

If there is an official announcement by the authorities that students could leave campus during the MCO or after it is lifted, USM would still encourage its students to stay on campus, especially those who are having difficulties with the online learning approach. However, if there are any students who wish to go back, the university has no plans to provide bus services to ferry them home at the moment, nor would it bear their transportation costs if they use their own transport.

It is necessary for the existing regulations to be complied with in the interest of the public and the country by supporting the efforts of the Health Ministry, the Ministry of Higher Education and the National Security Council (MKN) to curb the spread of COVID-19.

USM always monitor closely and understands the feelings of students and parents in facing this situation, whether students on or off-campus. I assure you that the University will do its best to assist every student to ensure that he/she is comfortable, provided with good food and adequate supply of basic essentials as well as being assured of inclusive teaching and learning processes, especially those conducted online.

The University via its lecturers and professional counsellors from the School of Educational Studies offers e-counselling service which is made available to all students to provide them with the emotional and psychological support whenever they need it during this time of uncertainty.

USM places the importance of the public and the nation above all others and takes the safety and well-being of its community members seriously.

Thank you.
