USM TO HOST ASLF 2021: AVENUE FOR ASEAN STUDENT LEADERS TO DISCOVER AND REFINE LEADERSHIP SKILLS
USM PENANG, 11 February 2020 – The Head of the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Student Representatives’ Council (MPP), Muhammad Amir Asyraf Mohd Sabri together with two other members recently attended the 8th ASEAN Student Leaders Forum (ASLF) 2020 and the 4th AUN Student Affairs Network Meeting (AUN-SAN) in Chiang Mai University, Thailand, along with USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Development Affairs and Alumni, HEPA), Professor Dr. Aldrin Abdullah.
According to Amir, ASLF 2020 was aimed at providing a platform for ASEAN student leaders to share their experience and views regarding student organisations and youth development in the region.
“Aside from that, ASLF was established as a platform for the student affairs administrators in the region to discuss and collaborate on various issues regarding student matters,” said the student from the School of Social Sciences.
In addition, the forum that was held from 3-7 February provided a surprise as at the end of the session, Malaysia was given the honour to be the host in 2021 and what ‘sweetened’ the news even more was that USM has been chosen as the venue and the organiser for the first time for this large-scale student leadership programme next year.
Activities held during the five-day forum include those on academic and non-academic issues, encompassing four main components namely discussion; group meets and workshop; presentation; and exposure to community and cultural elements.
ASLF started in 2012, where Nanyang Technological University, Singapore was given the honour to host it for the first time, with the theme “Student Governance in the 21st Century”.
