PENANG, 1 October 2019 – Two students from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Mechanical Engineering came out tops in a Skills Competition held recently.
The students were among the five from USM who participated in the SOLIDWORKS Skills Competition 2019 (Northern Region), organised by the IME Group of Companies and co-organised by UiTM Pulau Pinang, Permatang Pauh.
The competition was intended to bring young engineers from all over Malaysia to exchange tips and tricks on how to create designs in a manner that is faster and with greater accuracy.
The objectives of the competition are to create buzz and allow the discovery of 3D modelling skills, to promote STEM skills among students as well as to provide students the chance to further improve their resume through the competition.
The skill competition lasted a total of two hours, where students were tasked with answering 9 multiple-criteria questions relating partly to design, modelling, drawing and simulation.
Two students, Liew Shu Yan and Yew Jia Jing were chosen as top ten finalists in the Skills competition and were invited to the prize-giving ceremony during the SOLIDWORKS Innovation Day 2020 at Equatorial Hotel, Penang on 1 October 2019.
During the ceremony, Liew Shu Yan was chosen as the Champion of the competition, walking away with a trophy and certificate, a cash prize of RM500, SOLIDWORKS Advanced Training voucher worth RM3,200 and a SOLIDWORKS Professional Certificate Exam Voucher worth RM1,800.
Yew Jia Jing also received a Consolation prize consisting of a certificate, SOLIDWORKS Advanced Training voucher worth RM3,200 and a SOLIDWORKS Professional Certificate Exam Voucher worth RM1,800.
The students were supervised and guided by Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Salman bin Abu Mansor.
The Dean of USM School of Mechanical Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin Abdullah and the entire school community are very proud of this latest achievement and hope this will also spur other students to participate and excel in similar competitions.
