BANGI, 20 November 2017 – Students from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Chemical Sciences have made a name for the university by becoming 2nd runner-ups in the South-East Asian Global Innovation Challenge 2017.

The team, comprising of undergraduates, consisted of Kho Roger, Tang Kar Huey and Jane Ng, all under the supervision of Dr. Shangeetha Ganesan from the USM School of Chemical Sciences.

They presented a project on a filtration system to filter microbeads present in personal healthcare products, with the hope that more innovative products would be developed in the future to benefit mankind.

They brought home a cash prize of RM400, certificates and trophies. The theme for this year’s challenge was “Managing Contaminants of Emerging Concerns”.

Emerging contaminants can be broadly defined as any synthetic or naturally occurring chemical or any microorganism that is not commonly monitored in the environment, but has the potential to enter the environment and cause known or suspected adverse ecological and/or health effects to humans.

The challenge was organised by the Malaysia International Chemical Sciences Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
