BEIJING, CHINA, 31 October 2017 – The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Penang has received an Honourable Commendation for the Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation 2017.

RCE Penang was honoured for its efforts in empowering teachers with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) knowledge, initiated through workshops, webinars, research development, Sejahtera Club Schools co-curricular activities and opportunities to share ideas on ESD through the Regional Sejahtera Network.

Such efforts have been acknowledged to fulfil the requirements of the 2017 Wenhui Award, Innovations in the Professional Development of Teachers.

The announcement also included other recipients of the honourable commendations, along with the winners.

The Global RCE Secretariat is based at the United Nations University Institute for the Advancement of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in Tokyo, Japan.

USM is the first university in ASEAN to host the RCE for ESD, and RCE Penang is the seventh to be established in the world. RCE Penang was named RCE of the year for 2015-2016. Currently, there are 154 RCEs worldwide.

The Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation ceremony will be held in November this year in Shanghai, China.
