TWO USM SCIENTISTS CHOSEN FOR L’OREAL-UNESCO FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE FELLOWSHIP
KUALA LUMPUR, 24 October 2017 – Two female scientists from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have been acknowledged as recipients of the L’oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science 2017 Fellowship (FWIS), from results of the selection announced here recently.
The two USM scientists who have excelled in their research pursuits are Dr. Jasy Liew Suet Yan, a senior lecturer from the USM School of Computer Sciences and Associate Professor Dr. Teh Su Yean from the USM School of Mathematical Sciences.
Jasy was acknowledged for her work in developing a system which could facilitate in identifying signs of depression, by analysing emotion patterns on social media for the purpose of early intervention.
Su Yuen meanwhile received the award for her research in combining areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in efforts to safeguard the coastal resources in Malaysia.
The prestigious awards were presented by the Minister from the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Hajjah Nancy Shukri.
The USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail was also present and shared her feelings of elation with the achievements of the two USM scientists.
USM was awarded two out of three awards, which saw 208 local female researchers vying for the award.
